SWAA 2027 Photo Exhibit

This year, SWAA will be hosting a Photo Exhibit showcasing the creativity and perspectives of our members and attendees. Submissions may include digital or physical works that reflect anthropological themes, research, fieldwork, or artistic interpretations of the human experience.

Selected pieces will be displayed during the annual conference and featured in SWAA materials.

Exhibition Participation Requirements

Artists whose work is accepted must become SWAA members to participate in the exhibition and to be considered for awards.

Artists do not need to be present at the conference to receive an award.

How to Write an Artist Statement

Start with the title, year, and medium of your work. Then identify any people or subjects featured in the image, when appropriate.

Briefly explain what inspired you to create the work and what interests, experiences, or ideas inform your artistic practice. You may also include aspects of your background or identity that you feel are important to understanding the work.

Your statement does not need to follow traditional essay structure. Think of it as a guide for viewers, giving them context and points of entry as they engage with and interpret your work.

Image Upload
All submissions must be uploaded as a .jpg file.

Digital Image Submissions
- Save images in high resolution suitable for display on a PowerPoint slide.
- Upon acceptance, artists may be asked to submit a higher-resolution version of their work.
- Citation placards will be displayed on a separate slide.
Physical Artwork Submissions

If you are submitting a physical artwork that you plan to bring to the conference, please upload a clear image of your piece for review.
- Image size: 8.5 × 11″ or larger
- Artwork should preferably be mounted on foam core or printed on sturdy paper.
- Citation placards should also be mounted on foam core.

Image Use and Modification Permission*
Image Use and Exhibition Permissions

By submitting an image, you acknowledge and agree that SWAA may use your submission for promotional, educational, or informational purposes. This may include, but is not limited to, publication in the SWAA newsletter, display on the SWAA website, inclusion in conference materials, and use in other official SWAA events or media.

You also grant SWAA permission to make minor technical adjustments to your submitted image as necessary for exhibition, reproduction, or presentation. Such adjustments may include changes to saturation, contrast, brightness, cropping, and scale to accommodate display formats and maintain consistency across the exhibition.

SWAA will not make substantive alterations to the content or artistic intent of the work without the artist’s permission.
- I acknowledge that by submitting my image, I grant SWAA permission to use, display, reproduce, and make minor technical modifications to my image for official SWAA purposes, as described above.

Visual Art Competition
We are excited to announce the SWAA Conference Cover Art Competition!
