Janet Page-Reeves

Dr. Page-Reeves is a cultural anthropologist with training in political economy. She is a Professor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine at the University of New Mexico (UNM) and the Director of Research for the UNM Office for Community Health. She received her PhD from the City University of New York (CUNY) in 2019. She has a strong and unique background in theoretically grounded research and community-based applied work. Her work is infused with an appreciation for the salience of using a holistic approach as a foundation for understanding complex social issues. She has extensive research, applied, and community experience working on themes related to women’s lives, food insecurity, social determinants of health, immigrant health, social isolation and depression, cultural adaptations of interventions, and patient/community engagement. She conducted field research in Bolivia in the 1990’s and since 2006, has focused on health equity issues. Her work to design instruments and toolkits to address social determinants of health, including the WellRx Toolkit, and her design of patient-engaged approaches to research have received national recognition. She has a track record of significant funding, including from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) (multiple engagement awards and a highly competitive full research award), and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Her training as an anthropologist provides me with experience for designing and conducting research using an ethnographically inspired approach. She is the editor of two well-received edited collection books–one on women and food insecurity and one on community, culture and wellbeing. In recognition of her skills and contributions, she was appointed, and reappointed, as a member of the New Mexico Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. She is currently the invited editor for a Special Edition of a high-impact journal; she was recruited to join the national Scholars Strategy Network (SSN), and she served as Co-Chair of the New Mexico Chapter of SSN. Dr. Page-Reeves was the past President of the Southwestern Anthropological Association (SWAA) and currently serves as Board Chair.
