Hilarie Kelly

Hilarie Kelly received her Anthropology PhD from UCLA. Her graduate studies focused on human ecological adaptation, gender psychology, and African regional issues. Her thesis title is “From Gada to Islam: The Moral Authority of Gender Relations among the Pastoral Orma of Kenya.” She did further ethnographic research, published, and presented conference papers on a variety of topics, including developmental disability, aging, and HIV/AIDS risk behaviors in young adults. More recently, she has looked at dance in diaspora communities and Pacific Islander cultural revitalization movements, and has taught medical anthropology and visual anthropology on expedition with the Himalayan Health Exchange in northwestern India. Hilarie retired from the California State University system and has been teaching at University of La Verne. She served as SWAA President in 2015-2016 and writes a column on Museums and Exhibitions for the SWAA Newsletter.
